The YouTube video “Look Up” encourages people to take a break from their online lives to experience real connections. In it, British writer and director Gary Turk reads a poem (sounds more like rapping than reading a poem):
“Look up from your phone, shut down the display. Take in your surroundings, make the most of today. Just one real connection is all it can take to show you the difference that being there can make.”
The video shows people glued to their smartphones and laptops. A life-long love story then unfolds when a couple meets on a street corner, then go on to buy a house, have children and grandchildren.
Then it’s shown with the couple meeting on the same corner back at the beginning, yet failing to bond, because the man is busy checking his phone as the woman walks by.
“Look Up” urging people to look up from their internet devices and interact with real people has had the opposite effect – notching more than 24 million views in 12 days. Mr Turk, your video has people looking down.
