The Epic Split

Jean-Claude Van Damme has demonstrated the superhuman qualities of his groin in a new ad flogging Volvo trucks. The ad starts with a close-up of Van Damme’s face. As the camera zooms out, you realise he’s standing on the side mirrors of two reversing trucks.

The trucks then start to move apart, along with Van Damme’s legs. 13 seconds later the “epic split” is complete and Van Damme holds the groin-tearing position for another 25 seconds or so.

The ad is supposed to showcase “the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering”. Although Volvo says it didn’t use any visual tricks, a lot of people are questioning whether the video is real or fake. Despite the doubt, Van Damme’s lines in the ad are inspiring:

I’ve had my ups and downs, my fair share of dumpy roads and heavy winds. That’s what made me what I am today. Now I stand here before you. What you see is a body crafted to perfection. A pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of physics. And a mindset to master the most epic of splits.

Other than Van Damme’s stunt, did you notice the background song of the ad – Enya’s “Only Time”? Enya’s voice provides another layer to the ad – the courage of an action hero who takes the risk and illustrates his flexibility in the sunset.

Who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time

Who can say why your heart sighs
As your love flies, only time
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies, only time

Who can say when the roads meet
That love might be in your heart
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your heart
Night keeps all your heart

Who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time
And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time

Who knows? Only time
Who knows? Only time
