Although it’s only spring in Australia, the hot and dry weather triggered the worst fire disaster in New South Wales for 45 years. There were more than 50 fires burning across the state. Sydney turns to a city of smoke and below are some random shots taken when I was walking to the train station this morning.
The following photo which shows exhausted firefighters sleeping by the road as flames lap close by, has been seen by 3.7 million people on Facebook and it had received around 4300 messages of thanks. Matthew Jones-Power was one of the firefighters taking a nap on that morning. “We were waiting for the fire to come up to the road; we needed to take a break when we could.” They had worked non-stop for about 24 hours. Dear firefighters, although you don’t consider yourselves heroes, you are.
