If you want happiness to flow through your life, being generous is like turning on the tap. The more you can give, the more you will receive. Being generous is not just about money. Being generous with your time and energy is just as important. If you are generous in your relationships you will receive as much as you give.
Being generous to those less fortunate than you is not just about contributing time or money. It also means not judging someone on their appearance, education, accent or experiences. Everyone is on a different journey and each person has a different story to tell. Before you judge someone, take a minute to understand their perspective, their values and the reasons why they might be making the choices that they are making. Most people are actually doing their best, most of the time. If you want to be the best you can be, don’t judge anyone. Not even yourself – remember to afford yourself the same generosity you give to others.
Providing people with quality attention, being patient and kind and allowing them the time they deserve is one of the best ways we can demonstrate to the people we love how much we really value them. Those people who matter most often get rushed along and receive the worst of our attention. When you are truly generous, you give the people you love the best of yourself, not the worst. In the modern world, time is one of our scarcest resources and by giving of our time we show our love in far greater ways than any gift ever could.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
– Winston Churchill
